Entries to the La Grande Bellezza Award promoted by Starhotels, in collaboration with Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d'Arte, OMA - Osservatorio dei Mestieri d'Arte e Gruppo Editoriale, are now closed.
This first edition of the competition, with its evocative theme “A source of light”, has been a huge success: a success that can be easily measured by the number of entrants:
- 131 entries received;
- 15 regions of origin;
- 14 artisanal sectors represented: glass, ceramics, paper, metalworking, precious metals, decoration, mosaics, stone carving, plasterwork, wood, tailoring, carpetmaking, waxworks, leather goods;
- 22 to 86: the age range of the artisan candidates.
Many established and well-known names entered the competition, with a consistently high level of quality of the works put forward.
A wide variety of materials and techniques were in evidence, the products of traditional artisanal professions but also of contemporary artistic craftsmanship, embracing the design and cultural requirements of the project.
Among the techniques employed we find mosaics, plasterwork, glassblowing, glass fusing, bucchero, embroidery, marquetry, lost wax casting and even processes carried out using more modern technologies such as waterjet cutting.
Lamps, glass, mirrors, chandeliers, candelabras and lighting installations, but other works too, with different pieces presenting a symbolic rather than literal interpretation of the theme.
A veritable map of Italian master craftsmanship that represents the country in a much more meaningful way at this time of crisis and hardship for the country’s small shops, ateliers and businesses that should be protected and supported in every way possible.
Now begins the work of the eminent Award Panel, who will announce the 10 finalists and winner by September 2020. All participants will be notified of the result.
