While strolling through the streets, you realize that Bologna’s charm lies in its perfect blend of modernity and tradition, one of the aspects that most strikes tourists visiting the city. Here are the top places in Bologna for art, food and culture, easily reachable from Excelsior hotel, that we strongly recommend.

ART

MAMbo. An eleven-minute walk and you are catapulted into one of Italy’s most avant-garde modern art museums, housing a permanent collection of works by Morandi

The Civic Museum of Medieval Art- just a fifteen-minute walk from the hotel- showcases bronze statuessuits of armor, artifacts and illuminated manuscripts.

Piazza Maggiore: the throbbing heart of Bologna (a fifteen-minute walk from the hotel), known for the Neptune Fountain and the city’s major medieval-style buildings.

Among Bologna’s attractions are also the Asinelli Tower and the National Picture Gallery, housing one of the most important Italian artwork collections, with works by RaffaelloGiotto and Tintoretto.

If you would rather not walk or move around more quickly to reach these places, you should take a bus at the train station (number 21 or 30).

THEATRE

Teatro Arena del Sole, one of Bolognas major theatres, is a ten-minute walk from Excelsior hotel, at 44 Via dell’Indipendenza.

The theatre stages plays, ballet and music performances. In summertime, all performances are held in the theatre’s lovely cloister.
