The upper city
Bergamo is divided in two distinct parts: "città alta" (upper city), the historical center that looks more like a small Tuscan town, and "città bassa" (lower city), the heart of the city’s shopping district, where Cristallo Palace hotel is located.
Here are our recommendations on the must do/see/eat places in Bergamo, not far from the Cristallo Palace.
Bus number 11 takes you in twenty minutes to GAMeC, Bergamo’s modern and contemporary art gallery.
Piazza Vecchia is a ten-minute walk from the museum. The square is the heart of Bergamo’s historical center, enclosed within the city’s oldest buildings: Palazzo del Podestà, Palazzo della Ragione and the Town Hall’s Medieval Tower.
Nearby are the Colleoni Chapel, the Romanesque-style Duomo and the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore.
A five-minute walk from piazza Vecchia and you’re in via Arena, one of the city’s oldest streets, where you find the Donizetti Museum, dedicated to the famous composer.
Piazza della Cittadella (a five-minute walk from piazza Vecchia) is home to the Archaeological Museum and Museum of Natural Sciences.
More than a name, a guarantee: Donizetti Theatre. Cristallo Palace hotel is a fifteen-minute bus ride (number 11) from the well-known Bergamo theatre.
In addition to the Bergamo Music Festival and the opera and ballet season, the Donizetti Theatre hosts a very popular season of plays and contemporary theatre performances and many other events, such as the Bergamo Jazz Festival and an operetta season.
